LIHEAP: free federal help paying heating and cooling bills

LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is a federal program run by each state. It helps pay heating and cooling bills, and many states also offer crisis help when you have a shutoff notice.

Who qualifies is set by each state, usually based on household income and size.

Apply through your state or local community action agency. Applying is always free. Never pay anyone to apply for you.

Find your local office through the federal LIHEAP program finder or your state page.
