Free: Shutoff Notice Action Checklist

A one-page printable list: who to call, what to say, which documents to gather, and deadlines.

  1. Read the notice: write down the shutoff date and the amount due.
  2. Call the utility. Ask for a payment plan and which winter or medical protections apply.
  3. Ask for a medical certificate form if anyone in the home is seriously ill.
  4. Apply for LIHEAP or crisis assistance. Ask for proof that you applied.
  5. Gather ID, recent bill, proof of income, and household size.
  6. Write down who you spoke to, the date, and what they said.
  7. If the utility won't help, file a free complaint with your state utility commission.
