- HHS releases $3.6 billion in first FY 2027 LIHEAP funding
On October 9, 2026, the federal Office of Community Services released $3,631,860,000 in LIHEAP block grant funding for fiscal year 2027. That is 90% of the annualized amount under the current continuing resolution. States can now fund this winter's heating help.
- Ohio's 2026–27 Special Reconnect Order is in effect: $175 to keep or restore heat
The PUCO's Special Reconnect Order runs October 12, 2026 through April 16, 2027. Eligible customers of PUCO-regulated gas and electric utilities can pay up to $175 to avoid disconnection or restore service, plus a reconnection fee of up to $36.

Minnesota's Cold Weather Rule started October 1. Michigan, Wisconsin, New York and Iowa protections begin November 1. Massachusetts and New Jersey follow November 15, and Illinois, Pennsylvania and Indiana December 1. Most protections only apply if you take action.
